Detox Update

13 May

Well, it’s been a bit hit and miss since starting my green smoothie detox. The prep week was interrupted twice by babies and while I did manage to stay vegan and gluten free, I wasn’t so “green”. I think one day all I ate was toast with PB&J – three times, once before going to bed at 10 in the morning (was up all night), once when I woke up at 5pm to go back to the hospital, and again at 1 in the morning when I was finally making it to my bed again! All in all, staying VGF was a success because we know how I tend to eat when I’m tired.

The detox officially started on Monday with a modified water fast. From Sunday night after supper to Monday night after supper all you were to have was water, tea, lemon water etc. I had a jam packed clinic day on Monday so I didn’t really have time to eat anyway. By the time 6pm rolled around I was STARVING so I didn’t manage to make it home to make the nice, simple dinner they recommended but again, small victories, I stayed VGF and mostly raw (conveniently, a client had given me a wonderful basket of my kind of goodies).

Since being in Vancouver, I’ve been doing not so bad. With no prep time the first morning of the conference (only 5 hours of sleep!), I figured I could just grab a salad and maybe a vegetable wrap or something. Well, it was a complete bust! There were NO VEGETARIAN SANDWICHES! Unbelievable!! And both salads had either egg or cheese in them. Since I’m really trying to stay dairy free and I shouldn’t be eating eggs they were out too! I grabbed a bowl of the corn chowder only to get halfway through and realize that they probably made theirs with milk or cream (my intestines later confirmed this to be true!). Anyway, it was a hungry afternoon!

Other meals have remained within the boundaries of the detox, though I have to admit I’m having a hard time with the level of “raw” the detox recommends, sometimes I just want something cooked!! Obviously I have been eating hummus.

One thing I am really enjoying is our daily trip to the steam room and sauna. Each evening mom and I spend 20 minutes in the steam room and then 30-40 minutes in the infra-red sauna. You can almost feel the toxins pouring out of you! (haha!) Seriously though, it really is relaxing and I have been sleeping GREAT!

Tomorrow is supposed to be an “all smoothie day” but we are doing it today since we will be out and about tomorrow!

Overall though, I’m feeling pretty awesome! Decent amount of energy, well rested, feeling refreshed in the morning! Looking forward to not being in a conference all day (starting today) so I can get in some time to start exercising!

Detox Eve

1 May

Tomorrow begins the transition week into the 21 day Green Smoothie Detox. This week involves upping the amount of whole and raw foods in my diet so that it’s not too much of a shock to my system. I’m feeling fairly confident about this as I eat *pretty* well most of the time. And I do a lot of smoothies already. The raw bit will be new though.

I did the grocery shop for this week and came home with a cart FULL of fruits, veggies and greens. I’m kind of daunted by the amount of food I’ll be eating in this next week (and by the amount of fibre I’ll be eating!!), but I’m looking forward to the benefits. Between knowing how good I felt after dinner the other night and this detox, I’m hoping this will be a good kick start back onto my right track of eating.

But, because I’m also realistic and I know there will be a few ‘special occasions’ while I’m in BC, my mom and I have decided that 90% adherence to the detox will be our goal. Basically that means that we can eat non-detox meals 6-7 times over the three weeks. Once I get there, we will make a list of which things/restaurants/events we most want to do and pick the top ones.

I think going in with a plan and a partner will be the key to success! Wish us luck!

Fressen!

1 May

This past weekend I had a precious 36 hours off call. I packed a lot into a few hours! This is probably why I don’t feel like I had any time “off”, but I did have fun!

Thursday night I spent the night at a friends house so that we could get up early and watch the Royal Wedding live. Like many thousands of other people, some traditional English ‘tea’ foods were required for the event. As I’m trying to stick to my VGF way of life, I had to get creative. I made some fantastic ‘safe’ foods. I will put the recipe’s in a subsequent post.

Friday night saw Ian and I heading out with friends for my birthday dinner in Toronto. We went to Fressen, a fantastic vegan restaurant! It was so freaking exciting to look at a menu and know that I could eat almost everything on it. Pure joy! We started with some tapas: baba ganoush, hummus and some marinated olives. It was all wonderful, though Ian and I agreed we preferred our hummus. Theirs was still pretty good though.

Ian and I then shared a bowl of sweet potato, coconut, ginger soup. This may have been the best soup I have ever tasted. I half thought of ordering 3 more bowls and calling dinner done! But there were other things on the menu that I wanted to try. My main dish was a spelt pasta (not GF but wheat free) with grilled veggies and pesto and was AMAZING! I was glad I had re-thought the soup idea. Ian had a battered tofu with some greens and veggies which he thoroughly enjoyed. Natalie had the same pasta as I did and Glen ordered a Moroccan stew with brown rice. I tried a bite – it had been my second choice for dinner – it was also incredible.

For desert I had a cinnamon rooibos tea and we shared a chocolate flourless cake/pudding thing. I’m glad we split that between four of us because it was sooo rich! And it wasn’t too pricey either. The bill for the 4 of us came to $160 incl 4 alcoholic beverages, tax and tip.

It was SUCH a nice night – nice to spend time with some of my favourite people. Nice to not have to think about what I was eating and was I cheating again and then feeling like a terrible person etc etc etc. But the best part of all was waking up the next morning and feeling great – not bloated, not gassy, no sore back from my intestines pulling everything all out of whack ’cause they’re all in knots. Nope, nothing but feeling awesome! 🙂
